X-Ray Installations and Registration
Most States require that any ionizing producing equipment installation be registered with the appropriate State regulatory agency prior to the clinical use of that equipment. The modalities that would fall under these State requirements would include Radiographic and Rad/Fluoroscopy, CT, Mammography, C-Arms, and/or Interventional procedure equipment.

The registration process should begin at the time of facility or x-ray room planning and layout. There are several components that are included as part of the registration process. These components include:

Life Cycle of Diagnostic Imaging Installations and Registration

All new diagnostic imaging installations must be registered with the corresponding State department prior to the clinical use of that equipment. If you are replacing an older unit with a new one, the State should be notified of the disposition of the old x-ray unit. This would include the following equipment:

  • X-Ray; both Radiographic and Fluoroscopic
  • CT Scanner
  • Mammography
  • C-Arms; both fixed and portable
  • Dental
  • Veterinary

Once the layout of the room and the equipment placement has been determined, a shielding design must be developed and submitted to most States for review and approval. After all required shielding has been installed, a shielding integrity survey must be performed to determine if the shielding has been installed according to the design specifications. Documentation of the integrity survey must be provided to the State agency.

Initial physics testing of each unit should then be performed and the results submitted to the State along with their corresponding registration form.

If applying for an accreditation program, additional testing will be required once the unit is in use.
